Gilroy Fire Department Urges To Remove Knee-High Weeds

If you’ve got knee-high weeds or tall grass, it’s time to get to work.

With the days getting warmer, fire season is on its way. To protect your family and your property, the Gilroy Fire Department is urging the community to remove all dead plants, grass, and weeds within 30 feet of your home or business. You can further protect your property by trimming bushes, removing combustible debris from your property, trimming tree branches to at least 10 feet from your home or business, and clearing leaves, pine needles, and debris from roof and gutters. Please use power equipment in dry grass before 10:00 AM to prevent causing a spark.

These activities, are part of “weed abatement” and are considered an essential activity permitted under the current shelter in place order, and are required to be completed by March 15, 2020. After the March 15 deadline, Santa Clara County will begin property inspections, and if necessary, will order the necessary abatement work and send the property owner a 15-day courtesy weed abatement notice.
