Gilroy High Comes Out on Top in CCS Wrestling Finals

The wresting team at Gilroy High scores highest among all high schools at CCS for nine consecutive years in a row; seven wrestlers to compete in state championships next weekend.

The streak is alive and well.

The Gilroy High wrestling team earned top honors once again out of 75 high schools for the ninth consecutive year in a row at the 2011 Central Coast Section Championships. With 243 points when all was said and done, the  Mustangs blew away the field to claim another CCS team title.  St. Francis High-Mountain View finished in second place with 169.5 points.

Seven wrestlers will go on to the state championships in Bakersfield next weekend, said Greg Varela, head coach for wrestling at Gilroy High.

"We'll be back in our training room on Monday," he said. They train 12 months a year, he said.

Three of the wrestlers are freshmen, but they've been wrestling for years already. Varela says, "I've known a lot of these guys since they were nine years old. When they lose I feel like my own sons are losing."
