On Wednesday, May 20, 2020, the Historic Heritage Committee will be reviewing several documents related to the City of Gilroy’s history, including a Historic Context Statement, an update to the City’s Historic Resource Inventory (HRI), a proposed eligibility list, and a Property Owner’s Guide to Historic Preservation.

The Context Statement presents the history of the City’s built environment from pre-history to present, including patterns of development and architectural styles.

The Historic Resource Inventory identifies commercial, residential, and public buildings that are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), the California Register of Historical Resources (CRHR), and/or local significance.

The Property Owner’s Guide includes Frequently Asked Questions on the benefits and responsibilities of historic designation, general guidelines for the Monterey Road Downtown Commercial Historic District, information on the City’s Mills Act program, and the overall purpose of the City’s Historic Heritage Committee.

The Historic Heritage Committee (HHC) will review these documents on May 20, 2020 and make a recommendation to the Planning Commission regarding their acceptance. On June 4, 2020, the Planning Commission will also review the documents and make a recommendation to the City Council. The City Council is the final decision making body for adoption of the HRI Update and Context Statement.
