“On behalf of our entire community, we join these families in mourning the loss of their loved ones to this insidious virus,” center officials said in a statement according to a San Francisco Chronicle report.
Gilroy Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center started accepting coronavirus-infected patients in an isolated COVID-19 recovery unit in August, according to the KTVU report.

The center told the television station that 32 patients have since been admitted, cared for and have recovered.
The center’s COVID-19 recovery unit is believed to have led to the outbreak inside the facility, according to the KTVU report.
“It’s insane,” said Tammy Abreu-Butron, the daughter of an 87-year-old woman Audrey Abreu, who tested positive last week according to the report.
“It’s akin to having a match thrown into a vat of gasoline.”
The facility was cited and fined $1,000 in August after it failed to report COVID-19 cases in August and potential outbreaks in June, July and August, the report said.
The facility blamed its failure to report its COVID-19 cases as a “miscommunication related to timeframe required” it has since corrected, the report said.
