Armed Man Holed Up In Vehicle On 210 Freeway Gives Up After 5-Hour Standoff

At one point, the suspect allegedly exited the vehicle and fired shots into the air before holding a gun to his head, according to reports.

AZUSA, CA — A tense standoff involving a man holed up inside his vehicle on the Foothill (210) Freeway in Azusa concluded with the suspect being taken into custody amid reports that he fired shots into the air and held a gun to his head, authorities said Sunday.

It was not clear what triggered the initial pursuit, but the suspect drove from the 1200 block of North San Dimas Avenue in San Dimas before deciding to hole up on the eastbound 210 Freeway in Azusa. Special Enforcement Bureau personnel from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department were dispatched at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday to assist deputies from the sheriff's San Dimas station and the California Highway Patrol with the suspect, who was inside his vehicle on the eastbound freeway, east of Citrus Avenue, according to the Sheriff's Information Bureau.

The California Highway issued a Sigalert closing all lanes of the eastbound freeway at the Citrus Avenue off-ramp for an unknown duration.

At one point during the standoff, the suspect allegedly exited the vehicle and fired several shots into the air before holding the gun to his head, KTLA5 reported.

He surrendered to authorities shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday.
