Bishop Amat Squeaks Past St. Lucy's 44-39, Stops Regents' Brief Two Game Winning Streak

St. Lucy's had a brief lead, but couldnt hold on as the Lancers closed out the game late on key free throws

GLENDORA – The St Lucy’s basketball team had its brief two-game winning streak halted by the visiting Bishop Amat Lancers 44-39 Monday afternoon.

Natalie Guillien led the way for the Regents with 10 points and two rebounds, while Meghan Bibal added eight points and three rebounds and Danielle Tostado pitched in seven points.   Maryrose Wintorath and Havalin Nyviyh pitched in six points apiece, but contributed defensively, grabbing five and six rebounds, respectively.

Amat took the early 6-0 lead, all the baskets made by Melia Donald.  St Lucy’s finally made a dent in the scoreboard, scoring at about two minutes to go on a Bibal basket.

Nyviyh scored the first basket of the second quarter, and a 3-pointer by Guillien closed the gap to 11-9.  The Lancers would then go on an 11-7 run to close the half to take a 22-16 lead.

Marissa Brown led all scorers with 13 points, six rebounds and a block.   Adrienne Franco added 10 points and five rebounds for the Lancers who broke a five-game skid.

St Lucy’s scored the first seven points of the third quarter to take its first lead of the game 23-22 at about the 5:00 minute mark on a Kelly Ray layup, but the lead was short-lived as Amat would go on a 10-0 run to end the third quarter.  Franco had five points during the run.

Amat (6-9), however, couldn’t keep St. Lucy’s down, as the Regents went on a 14-8 run, including all seven points by Tostado.  Two free-throws by Guillen closed the gap for the Regents to 41-39 with under a minute to go, but that’s as close as St Lucy’s will get as Amat closed the game on late free throws by Rivera and Daminan Bauges.

St Lucy’s (7-7) has one more warm-up match Wednesday as it visits San Dimas.  They will then open League play Friday as it hosts Upland.  Tipoff for both games is at 4:45.
