California Virtual Academies Students in Glendora Raise Funds For Heifer International
Glendora full-time, online school students at California Virtual Academies work together to collect donations for Heifer International.
A group of Glendora-area, full-time, online school students at California Virtual Academies (CAVA) wanted to give back during the holiday season and recently collected donations for Heifer International, which help families to achieve self-reliance through sustainable agriculture and commerce.
These cyber students in grades K-12 don’t see each other face-to-face every day; instead they work online with state-certified instructors and the K12 curriculum, and meet weekly for in-person instruction with teachers, social interaction and projects like the fund drive through a CAVA program called Community Day.
Because they don’t meet daily in a traditional classroom, the CAVA students organized the drive to include weekly check-ins at Community Day and raised funds during their social and extra-curricular activities. One student talked about Heifer International at her gymnastics and judo classes and collected change.

CAVA students in the journalism club, one of many clubs at CAVA, polled the other students—virtually of course—to decide what Heifer International projects to fund. Heifer International provides families in poverty with livestock to help build an income. The top votes were for a flock of chicks, honeybees and a llama. The CAVA students were proud to announce that they raised enough money to purchase all three, plus an additional two flocks of chicks.

CAVA is a full-time, online public charter school, and we understand the importance of a diversity of activities and socialization for a child’s development, that’s why we provide ongoing social and academic opportunities outside of the home. In the Community Day program in Glendora, students engage with their peers, work with teachers in math and English/language arts from the award-winning K12 curriculum, and participate in academic and social enrichment opportunities such as science fairs, art shows, spelling bees, PE and community service projects.
Parents get the chance to network with other CAVA parents and staff for support, receive tips on teaching strategies, and enjoy a little socializing themselves.
The CAVA program combines active parent involvement with highly qualified, state-certified teachers and a challenging, enriching curriculum that includes online work as well as offline materials including books, science experiments, even art. CAVA offers students a choice to receive a more customized and flexible education, tuition-free.
