COUSD WORLD CLASS CYCLIST ONE OF 50 ULTRA CYCLISTS ACCEPTED TO SILVER STATE 508 BICYCLE RACE
The Silver State 508 Bicycle Race October 5‐7, 2014

On October 5th – 7th, David Farey, an Irrigation Technician from
COUSD, will race in the Silver State 508 from Reno to Eureka, Nevada
and back. This 508 mile bicycle race is revered the world over for its
epic mountain climbs, stark desert scenery, desolate roads, and its
reputation as one of the toughest but most gratifying endurance
challenges available, bar none. Last year, David raced in this event in
Death Valley, but this year the race was moved to Nevada due to a
pending review on all sporting events in Death Valley. This year’s race
course follows Hwy 50 and SR 772 with 16 mountain passes and
22,000 feet of vertical climb with elevations between 3,400 feet &
7,400 feet, and a 48 hour cut off.
It has taken years to compile a resume to be one of the 50 Ultra Cyclists around the world to be accepted to take on this challenge. This year, David has completed several other events in preparation for this grueling race, including Hemet Double, The Grand Tour (Highland) on fixed gear, & White Mountain on a classic bike. By finishing three doubles in the same calendar year he became a Triple Crown winner. He also took second place in his division of The 308, an epic race with over 20,000 feet of elevation gain from the Los Angeles basin through the Mojave Desert, and back in a time of 17 hours and 58 minutes. In addition, he also commutes by bike between 40 and 110 miles daily, depending on which route he takes, with a year to date of over 9,500 miles and over 500,000 feet of vertical gain.
