Dazzling Butterflies, Parakeets eating out of your hand & 350 Animals @Planet Rehab!

Walk through Planet Rehab's Butterfly House, hand-feed gorgeous Parakeets, learn what you can do to protect nature!

SAN DIMAS >> Planet Rehab will teach residents about the birds and the butterflies next weekend.

Founder and executive director Gary Mitchell will host the annual Butterfly Experience & Parakeet Encounter at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at the Planet Rehab Animal Sanctuary.

The sanctuary is located at 2745 W. Dalepark Dr., north of Foothill Boulevard and off Cataract Avenue. Due to parking constraints, guests are advised to park on Cataract.

Mitchell said the Planet Rehab Butterfly Experience is designed to raise awareness to “our rapidly depleting butterfly populations. Over 96.5 percent of the North American Monarchs have disappeared, largely due to the corn and soy that has been genetically modified to live in weed poison. The poison is sprayed by airplanes over millions of acres and kills milkweed, the only plant Monarchs can lay their eggs on.

“The Butterfly Experience gives guests the opportunity to get up close and personal with native butterflies, learn what they can do to help our struggling butterfly populations and even take home their own milkweed plants and seeds.”

The Parakeet Encounter gives guests the chance to have rainbow-colored parakeets fly to them and eat out of their hands, he continued. The Parakeet Encounter, he said, “is one more way Planet Rehab seeks to protect the environment and nurture the relationship between humanity and nature.”

Whether it is strolling through the gardens, seeing the koi ponds, enjoying the petting zoo or meeting more than 350 animals calling Planet Rehab their home, everything at Planet Rehab has the singular goal of educating Southern California residents on crucial environmental challenges and inspiring them to become part of the solution, Mitchell stressed.

“According to the latest United Nations Environmental Programme Report, 150 to 200 species are going extinct each day,” Mitchell lamented. “The Planet Rehab Butterfly Experience & Parakeet Encounter strives to enlighten others and in so doing, raise very needed resources for environmental missions.”

In addition to monetary sponsorships, Planet Rehab needs donations of food and habitat materials.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children. Additional information: 323-350-0873, planetrehab.org or Facebook Planet Rehab Group.
