Fink, Tartans Avenge Last Season Upset to South Hills, 28-7

Fink, who missed most of last seasons game because of an injury played an integral role in victory, running for two and passing for one TD

COVINA – USC commit Matt Fink ran for two touchdowns and threw for one more as the Glendora Tartans avenged last season’s defeat to the hosts South Hills Huskies 28-7 Thursday night at the Covina District Field in a Palomares league contest that was not as close as the score indicates.

Fink got Glendora on the board first, as he kept the ball and ran for 42 yards on the first play from scrimmage to give the Tartans a quick 7-0 lead.

After trading successive three-and-outs by both teams, Glendora finally got the ball in a favorable position when Glendora was able to jump on an errant snap deep in South Hills territory. Once again it was Fink who ran four yards for his second score of the game to take a 14-0 lead into halftime.

“It’s a good victory for us,” Glendora head coach Jerry Lewallen said. “I thought our kids played hard today and we executed relatively well.”

Glendora kept the momentum going as Trysten Suarez took the second half kickoff to the 32-yard line, culminating in a one-yard Andrew Montano run two plays later.

Fink struggled to throw the ball as he only had one completion on eight attempts for four yards and an interception. However, he made his biggest pass of the night, finding Tyler Shoenick for an 80-yard scoring pass which all but put the game away for the Tartans.

“I think we have balance and we ran the football well,” Lewallen said, “and that opens up opportunities in the passing game.”

The Huskies (1-5, 0-1 Palomares league) avoided the shutout when Christian Martinez fond Quinn Cotter down the right sideline 20 yards with less than 20 seconds to go in the game.

Glendora (5-1, 1-0 Palomares league) visits Bonita next Friday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
