Sierra High School Named Model Continuation School

Azusa Unified School District's Sierra High School was one 25 continuation high schools in the state to earn the distinction.

Sierra High School, a Glendora continuation high school, was named one of 25 model continuation high schools by Tom Torlakson, state superintendent of public instruction.

The California Department of Education and the California Continuation Education Association recognizes continuation schools based on the quality of their programs. Twenty-seven schools applied for the recognition and 25 were selected following an on-site evaluation by a review team.

Sierra High School serves nearly 200 students in the Azusa Unified School District and is one of three continuation high schools in Glendora. Whitcomb High School in Glendora Unified School District was named a model continuation school in 2011.

"Every student comes to school with a different set of needs, and our job is to provide them with the best chance to succeed," said Torlakson in a statement. "That's why it's so important to provide students who are having trouble staying in school with great continuation high schools.”

Continuation high schools help students 16 years old or older who lack sufficient school credits and are at risk of not graduating.

According to Torlakson, many students struggle with life situations that make it difficult to stay in school, including needing to work to help support family or other circumstances.

Continuation high schools offer alternative high school education focused on school-to-career education, more personalized instructional curriculum, one-on-one guidance and counseling and flexible schedules.

More than 69,000 students attended continuation high schools in the state for the 2010-2011 school year.
