West Covina Squeaks Past Glendora, 20-19

Missed extra points is the difference in an otherwise even contest

WEST COVINA –Given two chances to beat West Covina, Glendora’s kicker Christian Fulham was unable to convert either one, and the Bulldogs escaped with a 20-19 victory Friday night in a non-league matchup.

“He was an all-Valley kicker from last year,” Glendora head coach Todd Quinsey said of Fulham. “The kicks didn’t miss by very much, merely by inches.  If I had to do it over again, I am very confident that he will make the kick.”

Fulham also missed two of three point-after touchdown attempts.

“The missed PAT’s were the difference in the game,” Quinsey said. “If he were able to make them, we would not have been put in the situation to have to win on a field goal.”

Glendora took its first possession and promptly marched down the field, culminating in a 21-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Kianpour to Dillon Frank to take the early 7-0 lead.

West Covina would then respond to score on a three-play drive, highlighted by Jimmy Frazier’s 61-yard run on the first play from Scrimmage.  Chris Solomon would score two plays later from 19 yards out to get within 7-6.

Kianpour was 8 of 20 for 97 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception.  Skylar Crall lead the Tartans on the ground going for 59 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. Corey Victoria added 51 yards on 10 carries.

Glendora’s defense kept the Tartans in the game, as they intercepted West Covina’s quarterback Chris Caballero twice, and forced the Bulldogs into two fumbles.

“The defense struggled a bit in the first half,” Quinsey said. “When they had to, they stepped up and made plays in the game.  We were able to keep up with one of the best teams in the Valley.”

Frazier finished with 112 yards on eight carries and a touchdown, while Aaron Salgado added 63 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns.

After Salgado scored with 6:31 left in the game, Glendora went on an extended drive, lasting almost 9 minutes culminating in Crall’s four-yard run up the middle to bring Glendora to within 20-19.

West Covina would fumble the ball back to Glendora two plays later to set up Fulham’s chances to win the game.

Glendora (1-3) will have one more tune-up game next week against Lynwood before going into Baseline League play.  Kickoff is set for 7pm at Citrus College.
