The Chabot football team routed host Merced 61-19 Saturday night, improving to 3-2 to complete nonconference play. In the Glads’ first night game of the season, second-year head coach Brett McMurray’s squad shined on center stage.
Monty Turner had an outstanding game with 228 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown. Joe Tarin also had an electrifying effort, with 123 yards and three touchdowns on just three receptions. Credit the Glads offensive line with playing a big role in the team’s 625 total yards on offense, including 386 net yards rushing.
McMurray saw a lot to like in the balanced effort — one week after a 28-point loss to unbeaten Shasta.
“We challenged the team this past week and they responded well,” McMurray said. “We are continuing to emphasize playing for each other and being technically sound. We are still building our culture and we took a big step in that aspect this week. Our team is growing together every week and they are starting to buy into the entire process.”
Matthew Forbes also ran for 95 and a touchdown. Sefa Stephens had three receptions for 63 yards in the blowout.
Turner and Tarin were particularly impressive.
“Monty Turner has been running the ball well! He has great contact balance and vision. He runs hard,” McMurray said. “Joe Tarin has been great. He is explosive with the ball in his hands and great in the open field. He also runs great routes and finds space. I’ve been pleased with both of them as true freshmen.”
During the bye week, the team will practice Monday-Thursday and then take some time off.
“We will emphasize getting bodies healed and continuing to build culture and team unity,” the head coach said. “We will loosen up a little bit in our approach and have some fun during the week off and get ourselves ready to finish the season strong heading into conference play.”
The Glads open conference against Delta at 1 p.m. on Oct. 10 at Mt. Eden High.
