SONOMA COUNTY, CA — Where passersby see sawhorses and dusty windows, others see a complex that will transform the long-empty Graton firehouse into a cafe, marketplace, and indoor community hub.

Curiosity is growing as crews continue renovations and organizers launch a public investment campaign aimed directly at local residents for the Graton Station — the name of the would-be complex.

In Saturday, the group behind the campaign is launching a public investment campaign with coffee, pastries, music, and tours of the evolving site, including an outdoor sunken garden and a “conversation pit” under construction beside the firehouse.

Organizers, affiliated with ReVillage Development and the ReVillage Foundation, say they have already secured funding from aligned investors over the past year.

Now they are asking neighbors, artists, parents, farmers, and regular customers to participate in the Graton Station campaign through a public offering hosted on Wefunder.

The group say they draw inspiration from the “Slow Food” and “Slow Money” movements, which encourage communities to keep investment capital circulating locally rather than flowing into distant financial markets.

In the meantime, for some neighbors walking past the construction zone or working nearby, the project remains a bit of a mystery.

A woman at the Willow Wood Market Cafe said the project “looks exciting” as activity ramps up around the downtown corridor. The project is a cafe, she said, with "really good coffee."

Graton Station’s team brings together veterans of the restaurant, design, finance, and hospitality industries including SingleThread, Troubadour Bread & Bistro, Maison Porcella, Stitt Restaurant Group, Quail & Condor, SHED in Healdsburg, and programs connected to ReVillage and Graton Town Square.

The launch event runs from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at 3120 Ross Road in Graton.
