HEALDBURG, CA — The narrative is well-rehearsed: Long before tasting rooms, luxury hotels, and packed weekend crowds became part of daily life, Healdsburg was a farming community where families shopped at locally owned stores, children attended neighborhood schools, and agriculture drove the local economy.

This summer, residents and visitors can step back into that history through a free lecture series that follows the city's transformation from a quiet rural town to an internationally recognized destination.

The Healdsburg Museum's annual History Talks in the Plaza continue through Aug. 29, with Saturday morning presentations from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Plaza gazebo.

The series offers a look at what life was like before tourism and wine became the city's economic engine and visitors could outnumber residents 90:1.

During peak seasons, Healdsburg attracts as many as a million visitors, a sharp contrast to the community that once revolved around farming, ranching, family businesses, and local schools.

The free programs provides a sort of View-Master look at the people, businesses, and planning decisions that shaped modern Healdsburg.

Upcoming presentations include:

• July 11: "Three Pioneers" examines the lives of three early settlers who shaped Healdsburg following the Gold Rush.

• July 18: "Old-Time Shopping" looks back with a nostalgic lens at the era from the 1930s through the 1960s, when small stores and markets supplied local residents.

• July 25: "Mayberry to Beverly Healdsburg" explores one of the city's biggest turning points. Speakers will examine how an urban planning process launched in 1982 helped guide the city's transition into the upscale wine country destination known today.

The series opened June 20 with "A Year to Remember," including longtime residents reflecting on life in Healdsburg 50 years ago.

Admission is free. A complete schedule and additional information are available through the Healdsburg Museum.
