CHP said a 4-year-old was killed after an RV accidentally backed up over the child at a Sonoma County campsite.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA — A 4-year-old girl died after what investigators say may have been a tragic mistake at a popular Sonoma County campground.

The girl, whose name has not been released, died after a motorhome backed over her Sunday at the Salt Point State Park campgrounds.

The collision occurred shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday as a family friend was preparing to leave the campground, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver believed the motorhome was in drive and intended to slowly pull forward.

However, the vehicle was actually in reverse and backed into the child, trapping her underneath, according to reports.

Firefighters from several agencies responded and used jacks to lift the motorhome to free the girl. She was airlifted to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland with major injuries, according to press reports.

CHP was notified at about 4:30 p.m. that the child had died from her injuries, CHP spokesperson David deRutte told reporters.

The driver was identified only as a family friend.

Salt Point State Park is located on the Sonoma County coast, about 20 miles north of Jenner. The investigation remains ongoing.
