Authorities Still Monitoring Beached Boat Carrying 1,000 Gallons Of Fuel At National Seashore

BAY AREA, CA — Authorities are monitoring a 58-foot fishing vessel carrying about 1,000 gallons of diesel that ran aground Friday at North Beach in Point Reyes National Seashore.

A salvage operator was called in to remove the fuel, according to a U.S. Coast Guard news release.

No injuries, active fuel leaks, or wildlife impacts have been reported, according to the Coast Gaurd.

The fishing vessel Lake Bay has a maximum fuel capacity of 2,800 gallons and was reported to have approximately 1,000 gallons of diesel onboard.

"Our top priorities are ensuring the safety of the first responders and the public, stabilizing the incident, and limiting environmental impacts," Coast Guard incident commander Lt. Cmdr. Carey Lewis said.

Marin County Fire, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Office of Spill Prevention and Response, as well as the National Park Service, are providing support and technical specialists.

"Responders are continuously monitoring and evaluating the site for pollution and any potential risk factors so we can approach operations with intention to minimize environmental impacts," Lewis said.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
