HEALDSBURG, CA — Healdsburg police are asking students to skip an unsanctioned "Fugitive" game planned for tonight after the high school football game, warning that toy guns can make residents believe they are witnessing a real armed threat.
Healdsburg police said local students plan to participate in the game.
Recent versions have involved paintball, BB, airsoft, and Orbeez-style or gel-bead toy guns, police said.
Officers said in a warning on social media that the game can be dangerous and risks injuries, trespassing, reckless driving, property damage, and reports of people with weapons.
Police cautioned that behavior students consider funny or harmless can look very different to a resident or an officer responding to a report of people with weapons.
The department asked parents to discuss the risks and potential legal consequences with their children, know where they are Friday night, and strongly discourage them from participating.
"Students, you have built a strong reputation as responsible and community-minded members of Healdsburg," Healsdburg police said in the post . "Please don't risk your safety, someone else's safety, or your future for a game."
