SONOMA COUNTY, CA — Cooler temperatures, higher humidity, and the prospect of winter weather have reduced wildfire threats enough to lift Sonoma County's burn permit suspension.
The decision allowS residents with valid agricultural and residential burn permits to resume burning on approved days, but CAL FIRE will require permits and inspections for some burns.
The new rules began Sunday. But Sonoma County residents must confirm that authorities have declared a burn day before lighting fires.
CAL FIRE urged property owners to follow burning requirements, maintain control of fires, and take precautions against spreading flames. Individuals can face liability if a fire escapes their control and spreads onto neighboring property.
Residents conducting pile burns must follow these requirements:
CAL FIRE described residential pile burning of forest residue as an important tool for reducing fire hazards.
State, federal, and local land management and fire agencies also plan to use the seasonal opportunity to conduct prescribed burns on private and public lands to improve forest health and resilience.
Agricultural burns must receive CAL FIRE inspections before ignition through the end of peak fire season.
Other burns may also require inspections, which residents can verify by contacting their local air quality district.
Southern Sonoma County residents can call the Bay Area Air Quality Management District at 877-466-2876. Northern Sonoma County residents can contact the Northern Sonoma County Air Pollution Control District at 707-565-2876.
Residents can find additional burning information at CAL FIRE's website.
