Let's Talk Kevin's Bacon

Seven Degrees of Separation at work in the South Bay

Be careful what you say to the stranger sitting beside you
at your next social outing.

The world is so small, so connected, even when we don’t purposely
try to conjoin the pieces via our vast social media networks.

In my previous life, not the reincarnation type, but my life
before I became the South Bay Realtor of today, I lived in Saudi Arabia with my
late husband and daughter.   I met a family from California who was also
living in Riyadh.  What is so unusual about
this encounter? Didn’t I meet a whole bunch of families or were we living in a
cave in the desert?

This family was from Hermosa Beach. A husband, a wife and
two kids. Way back then in 1997 I wasn’t too familiar with the South Bay
believe it or not. I had grown up in Beverly Hills (didn’t venture South),
lived in France, DC, Sweden, NYC, UK, St. Barths and other lovely corners of
the world. The South Bay and Hermosa Beach specifically didn’t register on my personal Google Earth Map while chatting with my new friend at the Souq in Riyadh. Our friendship blossomed even though I was geographically challenged by Hermosa Beach.

Flash forward a couple years. My pal Mary, left Saudi, left
her husband and moved on with her life. We stayed close thank goodness because
when my husband died of a sudden heart attack I had to head back to California,
the land of my youth to start the next chapter of my life. It’s nice to have a
friend waiting for you.

Flash forward again. 2013. I now know Hermosa Beach like the
back of my hand. I sell more property in Hermosa Beach than almost any of the
Beach Cities! Just closed one this week. I am at an Open House on 8th
as I write this….Open House is a little slow. Beach Day! Buyers are enjoying
the first rays of summer.

I digress. Remember my pal Mary from Saudi? Well she invited
my hubby (yes new hubby of 10 years) to a dinner party at her brothers in
Hancock Park a few weeks ago. Great! Fun! But oh the drive. When you live in the
South Bay you never want to leave!

The Host of this most wonderful outdoor soiree got his Real
Estate license in the very office where I spend most of my life now. He knows
my managers and agents. He spent many years there. WOW. What a small world.
Obviously we talked shop all night. I do LOVE what I do and I guess he does
too, or he was just being polite.

Seated next to my hubby was my pal Mary’s brother. Come to
find out that he is in the same business as my client who is also my neighbor
and who is working on a show with Kevin Bacon. 7 degrees of separation or does
that make 6?

I guess you have to chalk it up to the coincidence of being
in LA, the land of TV, film and Real Estate Moguls. But back in 1997, I was an Expat,
living a wild life in the Magic Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I didn’t know just how
HUGE the South Bay would become in my professional and love life!

The world is TINY in its vastness. Make it your oyster. Be
kind to strangers. Take care of your friends. And always remember, you never
know who you will be sitting next to at the next dinner party.
