Chamber Selects Corinne Ybarra as 'Woman of Year'

An awards ceremony is set to take place Jan. 12 at Union Cattle Company.

In a , Hermosa Beach resident Corinne Ybarra once called the city where she lived, "land that I love."

The two-time breast cancer survivor continues to give back to the community she loves by volunteering in a number of local programs—and in honor of her efforts, the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday announced naming Ybarra as Woman of the Year.

An awards ceremony is planned to take place Jan. 12 at Union Cattle Company.

Ybarra moved to Hermosa Beach in 1967. She still remembers the city's old , hanging out at Stub’s Pub, burgers at Juicy’ James and renting surf mates from the Bathhouse, according to the chamber.

Ybarra began to give back to the community in the early 1990s, volunteering for events at the where she worked with children during their holiday breaks.

Her volunteer work turned into a paid position with the city where she began working with local children’s programs as well as city events, according to the chamber.

Ybarra then joined the committee that initiated the city's first . She also served as a co-chair for a community event called "Aloha Days" with her husband Abel. The event raised funds for a to be included as part of the .

Ybarra has volunteered at Fiesta Hermosa and served as volunteer coordinator for "First Night," a New Year’s Eve celebration in Hermosa Beach.

Her contribution to the community continued as a supporter of , where she served as treasurer for the organization that helped revitalize parks in the area.

Ybarra is a member of the first graduating class of as well as a long time volunteer at the annual .
