City Of Hermosa Beach Coronavirus Update For August 6, 2020

Local Updates

The City Adds Personnel to Enforce Face Mask Requirements: Signage has been added around town and the City announced today that additional personnel will join the Hermosa Beach Police Department (HBPD) beginning Saturday to enforce the urgency ordinance the City Council approved last week that requires face coverings anytime people are in the more crowded parts of the City. The ordinance also imposed administrative fines for violations. For more information, see the City’s press release.

Community Reminder - Rewatch the 2020 Hermosa Beach State of the City Address: Due to COVID-19, Hermosa Beach Mayor Mary Campbell hosted the 2020 Hermosa Beach State of the City Address online last Thursday with the theme of “Resilient Together.” To watch the address, visit the City’s website.

U.S. Census Will End Counting on September 30; Hermosa Residents Encouraged to Respond: According to a statement from the U.S. Census Bureau’s director issued this week, the Bureau will end all counting efforts for the 2020 census on September 30, a month sooner than previously announced. The City strongly encourages Hermosa residents to respond to the 2020 Census, as these numbers are used to determine local funding and political representation for the next decade. Community Reminder - Los Angeles Regional COVID Fund Recovery Grant Applications Close Tomorrow: As a reminder to Hermosa and Los Angeles County businesses, applications close tomorrow for the third round of Los Angeles Regional COVID Fund funding that will provide grants of $5,000 to micro-entrepreneurs and $15,000 for small businesses and nonprofits affected by the ongoing unprecedented economic pressures caused by COVID-19. The program also offers loans, coaching, and technical assistance in multiple languages. Applications for the third round of funding opened August 3 and will close tomorrow, August 7. Community Reminder - Safe in the South Bay Pledge: Each week, Hermosa’s Chamber of Commerce is providing an updated list of the businesses in Hermosa Beach that have taken the “Safe in the South Bay Pledge” to follow proper protocols and slow the spread of COVID-19 for their employees and customers. L.A. County Exceeds 200,000 Positive Cases as COVID-19 Crisis Response Continues: The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported a grim milestone today with more than 200,000 cumulative confirmed COVID-19 cases in Los Angeles County. The Department also reported 48 new deaths and 3,290 new cases of COVID-19 today alone. To date, Public Health has identified 201,106 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County, and a total of 4,869 deaths. The County reported two additional COVID-19 cases in Hermosa Beach since the City’s last update this past Monday, bringing the City’s total to 153 COVID-19 diagnoses and 2 COVID-19 related deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Widely Cited COVID-19 Model Predicts 300,000 U.S. Deaths By December: According to a widely cited University of Washington model, U.S. deaths from COVID-19 are predicted to reach nearly 300,000 by Dec. 1. The estimated forecast of 295,011 deaths by December 1 is 137,000 more than the roughly 158,000 U.S. deaths reported so far.

Global Coronavirus Figures: There are almost 19 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 worldwide since the start of the pandemic, and over 710,000 COVID-19 related deaths have occurred across the globe as of August 6, according to Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center.

Please continue to follow public health experts’ recommendations to avoid spreading the coronavirus including frequent handwashing, wearing a face covering, keeping a safe distance from one another, and staying home if you are ill. Public Health has issued the following guidance during this time of increased spread: If you are mildly sick, stay home for at least seven days or until 72 hours after being fever free, whichever is longer. Call your doctor if you are concerned and/or your symptoms worsen.
