The City of Hermosa Beach recently improved access to the beach and ocean by adding more than 100 feet of a polyester mesh beach mat, called the Mobi-Mat, to the existing beach access tiles at 11th Street near the Pier.

The newly installed mat brings people with mobility issues closer to the ocean, while also providing room for lifeguard vehicles to patrol the area. The mat also will help families, who are pulling wagons and pushing baby carriages, to traverse the sand.

The City of Hermosa Beach’s existing tiles spanned 168 feet of the beach, as recommended by the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) specialists the City consulted regarding the length of the access mat for the winter months. The Mobi-Mat addition extends the access mat to 275 feet in length, which is the length the ADA specialists recommended for summer months.
“Hermosa values access for all our residents and visitors,” said Hermosa Beach Mayor Justin Massey. “City Staff worked hard and found the resources to extend the beach mat, and we are happy they installed it in time for our residents and visitors to enjoy the summer. We also thank the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors for its help in obtaining the mat.”
