"Rubber Soul" was released by the Beatles in December, 1965. Inspired by the folk-rock sound blossoming in the United States, the songs on the Rubber Soul album show the influence that the sound of the Byrds and the songwriting of Bob Dylan were having on the Beatles. The album was listed at number five on Rolling Stone Magazine’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list. In creating the album, the Beatles were expanding conventional rock instrumental parameters by using a sitar on “Norwegian Wood,” French-like guitar lines on “Michelle” and “Girl,” fuzz bass on “Think For Yourself” and a piano made to sound like a harpsichord on “In My Life.” An unusual percussion source was also created by Ringo by his tapping a pack of matches with his finger. This "tapping" sound can be heard in the background of "I'm Looking Through You.” "I spent two hours in the studio trying to find the best sound to duplicate the pack of matches on "I'm Looking Through You'," said Axel Clarke, who portrays "Ringo" in the show. "I use a bongo head on a towel during the show," continued Clarke, who teaches high school by day and slips on a wig and a Liverpudlian accent to perform nights with the show. Where did the name "Rubber Soul" come from? Before 1965, bands named albums after song or film titles or a cute catch phrase like "Beatles For Sale." Almost three weeks into recording the album, John, Paul, George and Ringo still hadn’t decided on a title. During an interview on November 1st, 1965, Paul joked that “the title of which could be ‘It’s The Bloody Beatles Again!” Paul later explained that the title came from a U.S. newspaper article he read about someone describing the Rolling Stones as less than extraordinary blues musicians. ‘Mick Jagger, man. Well you know they’re good – but it’s plastic soul.’ So ‘plastic soul’ was the germ of the ‘Rubber Soul’ idea," said Paul. As far as their songwriting on the album, it was obvious that a change was in the air. Paul explains: “The direction was moving away from the poppy stuff like "Thank you Girl", "From Me To You" and "She Loves You." The early material was directly related to our fans, saying, ‘Please buy this record,’ but now we’d come to a point where we thought, ‘We’ve done that. Now we can branch out into songs that are more surreal, a little more entertaining.’ And other people were starting to arrive on the scene who were influential.
