Landmark Hermosa: Hope Chapel

If you guessed Hope Chapel for this morning's trivia, you were right.

on PCH has served evangelicals in Hermosa Beach and the greater South Bay community for 40 years.

Founded by Rev. Ralph Moore in 1971, Hope Chapel is a member of the International Foursquare Church, whose mission is “to glorify God and advance His kingdom.”

Advocating Bible study, prayer service, fellowship, baptism, communion and worship, Hope Chapel has grown to be one of Hermosa’s largest churches.

In 1976, the congregation outgrew its facilities, leading it to purchase an abandoned bowling alley that once rested on the 2300 block of PCH, where Hope Chapel now sits.

The church’s founding was said to have “given rise to 50 other churches” as part of the Los Angeles-based International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, according to a 1997 report in the Los Angeles Times.

Moore left Hermosa in 1983 to establish a sister church in Hawaii, Hope Chapel Kaneohe, beginning a long line of other evangelical churches to follow across the nation.

Senior Pastor Zac Nazarian took Moore's place at Hope Chapel in Hermosa Beach. The chapel’s congregation has reached 2,500, and the church includes a private academy, which serves 170 students.
