Landmark Hermosa: Java Man

If you guessed Java Man for this morning's trivia, you were right.

Every city has its neighborhood coffee shop and in Hermosa Beach, many residents flock to for their espresso fix.

In 1992, Rick Hankus opened this Hermosa coffeehouse in a Pier Avenue bungalow. The corner house was built downtown in 1929, and was previously occupied by John Purchase Realty.

Java Man opened during the brink of a new coffee movement in the 1990s, "when coffee began getting the respect once reserved for fine wines," the Los Angeles Times reported in 1993.
