Landmark Hermosa: Sangria

If you’re staying in town for the Memorial Day weekend but are in desperate need of a vacation, head over to Sangria restaurant on Pier Plaza for a taste of the Spanish Mediterranean and Baja Peninsula.

Having celebrated , Sangria is one of the Pier’s most popular go-to restaurants and bars. And like wine, this Hermosa bar gets better with age.

Owners Kevin Barry, Matt McDaniel, Chris Pike and Mike Rossi opened their downtown dinner lounge in 1995.

The group was inspired after a surf trip to Spain, naming their establishment after the popular Spanish beverage: Sangria.

Sangria was the first restaurant and bar in downtown Hermosa to have a dance floor, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times. Locals and promenade patrons flock to the popular bar on weekends to dance, or listen to jazz on Wednesday nights.

Patch’s former “After Dark” columnist Danielle Lengelet has coined Sangria as “more than just another bar” on the Pier.

“I could choose any of the Pier Avenue bars to spend my free time, but when there's good times, good tunes and good brews at a place that feels like home, it's hard to go anywhere else,”  last year.

Another fan of this Spanish-inspired nightlife spot is Patti Stanger, star of Bravo's Millionaire Matchmaker.

“Great single manspotting place...Sangria is the bomb hot spot,” the reality star boasted on Twitter last month. She sent another tweet Sunday reiterating: "Met a lot of hot guys in Hermosa (the best men at Sangria.)"
