Longevity in Hermosa: Marilyn Shaw
Patch talks to seniors about their secrets to living long lives, as the average life expectancy in Hermosa Beach is 80.4 years.

Hermosa Beach ranked as the most affluent city in Los Angeles County, according to a report released by the county's Department of Public Health. But the average life expectancy in town is 80.4 years, which is not much higher than the county's 80.3 years average.
This is the first in a 8-part series profiling Hermosa's longest-lived residents, as they share their thoughts about longevity, happiness, and why the city's high economic ranking doesn't translate in residents' life expectancy:
Hermosa Beach resident Marilyn Shaw, 77, spoke with Patch, while spending an afternoon at the community senior center, about how staying connected with friends and family helps her maintain a healthy life.

Hermosa Beach Patch: Why do you think that Hermosa Beach doesn't fare much better than Los Angeles County, over all, in terms of life expectancy?
Marilyn Shaw: That's a good question, I don't really know. I haven't been in Hermosa Beach [for] that long, [but] I think they all fare pretty much the same.

Patch: How do you stay healthy as a senior?
Shaw: I have a very good social life. My family is in Manhattan Beach. I have many friends here in all types of activities … I joined the senior center, I try to take advantage of whatever is out there. I volunteer in the Friends of the Library. I'm in the garden club. I'm in the Hermosa Beach women's club.
Patch: Do you exercise at all to stay healthy?
Shaw: I certainly do. I take Tai Chi once a week; I'm also in another class here [at the senior center] about balance and coordination, when I can make it. I walk every single day. I'm in a walking group, we have structured walking two days a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays, [called] "the Walkers and the Talkers," down on The Strand.
Patch: What are your secrets to longevity?
Shaw: I have good genes I guess, and I think walking is my saving grace. I eat and drink in moderation, I eat what I want and drink wine everyday.
Patch: As a senior, what do you think is the secret to happiness?
Shaw: I think surrounding yourself with people you love and they love you.
Patch: What do you advise people to avoid doing to stay healthy in the golden years?
Shaw: Don't let stress get to you. I sort of have this philosophy like the Buddhists have, just live in the now, enjoy each day, and take each day as it comes. Enjoy your friends, your family, and be at peace with yourself.
