MCHS Valedictorian: Marie Lauzon

Students with cumulative GPAs of 4.0 are named valedictorians at Mira Costa High School—here we salute Marie Lauzon for her achievement.

As the Mira Costa High School class of 2011 prepares for a new journey in life, Marie Lauzon told Patch that she is beyond ready to see "what else is out there."

The graduating senior will be attending Baylor University in the fall. Lauzon's major is undecided, but she said that she is leaning towards studying applied mathematics and minoring in creative writing.

Lauzon talked to Patch about why she selected Baylor and some of her treasured experiences at Mira Costa.

Hermosa Beach Patch: Looking back, what was the best thing about Mira Costa?

Marie Lauzon: Looking back, the best things about Costa were the lasting friendships I made and the amazing teachers that helped guide me along the way.

Patch: Were there any teachers who particularly inspired you?

Lauzon: One particular teacher that inspired me was Ms. Vaughan because after having her all four years, not only did she teach me how to become a more confident writer, but also how to become a more confident person.

Furthermore, she taught me that nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something, which encouraged me to lend a helping hand through programs like Operation Angel Tree and to use my skills in the classroom to help others, by becoming a tutor.

Patch: What activities were you involved in? What are you passionate about?

Lauzon: My activities in high school include: varsity basketball (see accompanying photos), member of the PACE program, New Life Christian Club, volunteer at Torrance Memorial, math tutor, H20 for Life! Club, sponsored child through World Vision, etc.

Patch: Was it hard picking colleges? What other choices were you debating?

Lauzon: The college process was exhausting, but I am extremely excited about Baylor—I was deciding between Baylor and Wake Forest University. I knew I wanted to go to a 'southern' school with strong academics, an exciting sports program, and small town atmosphere, and after visiting Baylor and experiencing the welcoming Christian environment, I fell in love.

Patch: College is right around the corner. Are you moving soon? What are you looking forward to?

Lauzon: Move-in day is August 18 and I am really looking forward to the traditional dorm experience, and getting to meet new people from all over the U.S.
