MCHS Valedictorian: Riley Thomasson
Students with cumulative GPAs of 4.0 are named valedictorians at Mira Costa High School—here we salute Riley Thomasson for his achievement.

Riley Thomasson is a graduating Mira Costa High School valedictorian who is not afraid to say that he doesn't have it all figured out just yet.
The young musician will head to Princeton University in New Jersey next school year to continue doing what he loves (play music) and figure it out along the way.
Thomasson talked to Patch about his time at Costa and advice for incoming freshman.

Hermosa Beach Patch: What was your main focus at Mira Costa?
Riley Thomasson: My main focus was definitely both academic and extracurricular. I made sure I was doing well in my classes, but on top of that I was a member of the band program all four years, which was a significant extracurricular commitment.

I participated in the Marching Band, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Percussion Studio.
Patch: Where have you decided to attend college?
Thomasson: Princeton University.
Patch: What will you be taking with you from Mira Costa when you go? Do you plan on studying similar subjects, participating in the same activities, or are you breaking into something new?
Thomasson: I definitely plan on continuing my musical interests at Princeton by joining either the Marching Band or the Symphony Orchestra. In the realm of academics, I'll be taking many math and science classes as an engineering major.
I also hope to diversify my schedule and take non-major courses like economics and history. I'm also open to starting new activities like intramural billiards or one of the many a capella groups on campus.
Patch: What was the college selection process like for you? How did it feel when you finally chose the school you would like to attend?
Thomasson: The college selection process was by no means simple. I remember the horrible thought that I would choose the 'wrong' place and end up hating my 'golden years.' I soon realized, however, that I'd be able to be happy pretty much anywhere. I think that it's about working with what life gives you rather than worrying about what it kept for itself.
When I finally chose my school I can't say I was certain it was where I wanted to go. But over the last few months I've gained the confidence that I made the right decision.
Patch: What advice do you have for an incoming freshman at Costa?
Thomasson: Get involved—join clubs and extracurricular activities early and stick with them all four years for the best experience. Also learn to balance your life between academics and social outings, because too much of either is no fun.
Enjoy high school while you can, because it will be over before you know it, and you'll regret all the opportunities you didn't take. Most importantly, do what you like to do and do it proudly.
Patch: What will you miss most about your high school experience?
Thomasson: All the amazing friends I've met and grown to love and adore over these four years, and all the unforgettable memories we've shared here.
Patch: What will be your big accomplishment 10 years from now?
Thomasson: I really can't predict something like that. I can only hope I'll be somewhere where I'm happy doing whatever I end up doing with my life.
