On Monday,
May 19, Chef Matthew Lightner of New York City’s two-Michelin-starred restaurant
Atera will be featured as part of Los Angeles’ most noted “guest chef” program,
the Culinary
Masters Series at The Strand House restaurant in Manhattan Beach. He
will join the restaurant’s Executive Chef Greg Hozinsky in the kitchen at The
Strand House to prepare an exclusive five-course, wine-paired culinary feast
for 100 guests.
The Culinary Masters Series has brought nearly
20 of the world’s best chefs to the South Bay over the last two years, adding
fuel to the area’s reputation as a beachside culinary oasis. As the next chef
to participate in the acclaimed series, Chef Lightner will bring the South Bay
the cuisine that has made Atera “one of the most fascinating experiences you
can have in a New York City restaurant,” according to The New York Times.
The dinner will feature Lightner’s modern
American cooking and will mark his return to California after stints in some of
the world’s most celebrated kitchens. Lightner previously served as the chef de
cuisine at L’Auberge in Del Mar, CA before embarking on a program that had him
traveling around Spain where he spent time working with two-Michelin-starred Mugaritz
under Chef Andoni Luis Aduriz. Following his time in Spain, Lightner staged
with Chef René Redzepi at Noma, his two-Michelin-starred restaurant in Denmark
which was recently named the No. 1 restaurant on the San Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants for 2014 list. Upon returning
stateside, Lightner earned national acclaim at Castagna in Portland, including
a spot on Food & Wine’s “Best New
Chef” list in 2010, before opening Atera in New York City. Lightner’s cooking relies greatly on his innate connection to time and place
to create a dining experience unique to itself, often using ingredients
from Atera’s garden and local farms and producers. For the Culinary Masters
Series dinner, each of the five courses will be paired with wines from Oregon’s
Brick House Winery. Winemaker Doug Tunnel will be present to discuss his wine
pairings.
