New Video Shows Missing Dad's Last Moments In Hermosa Beach

He was last seen at the pier in March 2016. He walked into the dark, never to be seen again.

HERMOSA BEACH, CA – New video shows an Iraq War veteran and father of three's final moments at the Hermosa Beach pier in March 2016 before he went missing. Michael VanZandt walked into the dark, never to be seen again. Two years later, his family is still searching for him.

Grainy video clips from security camera footage obtained by CBSLA appear to show the 36-year-old leaving the American Junkie Bar near the Hermosa Pier and going next door to an ATM. He appears to be later seen walking toward the beach, and then he walks out of view. His friends from the bar, meanwhile, had already left for another spot – by the time they tried to text him, his phone had died. Based on the security footage, police say he never got their message.

“There’s no closure,” Michael’s brother Tyler VanZandt told CBSLA. “I think that’s the toughest part.”

Tyler, who moved to Redondo Beach to help search for his missing brother, told The Beach Reporter that the case is stagnant. Michael's story will be aired on the Investigation Discovery Channel documentary show "Disappeared" on May 20, and the family is hoping it will produce a new lead, or help them find peace.

For the first time this week, their mother, Robyn Gretz, and her husband, Keith, visited the South Bay to retrace Michael's last steps, the newspaper reported.

“It’s not easy,” Robyn told The Beach Reporter about reliving her son’s disappearance. “But if someone says ‘Hey, I remember that guy.’ We don’t know. It’s worth a shot.”

Hermosa Beach police never found Michael's phone, clothing, or any other big clues that points toward his whereabouts, CBSLA reported. There's no evidence of foul play, or that Michael intentionally hurt himself.
