School District Distributes Preliminary Lay-off Notices

The lay-off decisions must be made by June.

The Hermosa Beach City School District has sent preliminary lay-off notices to 18 employees, nine of which are full-time teachers and district supervisors. Temporary teaching positions constitute the other nine.

The layoffs are part of the $1.5 million in cuts from the K-8 district's budget. The staffing changes would make the average class size ratio 30-to-1.

The preliminary notices were given out by the Monday, March 15 deadline.

Not all 18 employees will be completely laid off, however. The temporary teaching positions work on one-year contracts; those contracts would not be renewed if decided by the school board.

Approximately $1 million was raised by local community members and students in the hopes of preventing any layoffs. The outcome of this money and how it may affect the district layoffs has not yet been determined.

The school board must issue out notices to teachers by May 14 and make a decision on the layoffs by the end of June.
