Wondering what's going on in and around the South Bay this Weekend?

As you may or may not know, Patch has city specific pages, Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach. I used to post the South Bay By Jackie Weekend Guide to each. But now due to new limitations imposed by Patch.com, which limits me to choosing only one Patch site each week (alternating weekly) instead of all of them, I will no longer be posting the South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide to any of the four local Patch pages. If you would like to continue reading the Weekend Guide each Thursday, you can subscribe for FREE at https://www.SouthBayByJackie.com to receive it in your email or you can view it on the website. Scroll down any page on the website and on the right side you’ll find a subscription box.

There’s no sugar coating any of this – things have gone from bad to worse to untenable. More than forty million Americans have filed for unemployment during this unprecedented pandemic crisis, over 100,000 thousand Americans have died from the virus, and now we have a firestorm of protests and riots raging across the country. I can’t wrap my head around the scope of damage, destruction and death, so I’m going to focus on the good happening in our South Bay.
First, our local authorities have been extraordinarily proactive. Our city managers and first responders already had plans in place to deal with any civil unrest – they implemented them rapidly, and systematically informed the public of all updates (my phone has been squawking non-stop with all the alerts).
Second, the curfews are working. With businesses closed and residents staying at home, law enforcement is better able to discern those looking to take advantage of the situation or cause trouble. (I was pretty damn impressed at the way the City of Torrance blocked all access to Del Amo Fashion Center and other targeted structures.) The emergency curfews put in place were highly effective in several South Bay cities, giving law enforcement the authority to make numerous proactive stops, leading to several arrests.
Third, while social media has enabled rioters to coordinate their plan of attack, it has also facilitated communication among our neighborhoods. During the last week, several South Bay social media pages have been sharing information on planned and impromptu protests, suspicious activity and the latest alerts and updates. On the other hand, there are a lot of false reports and rumors being generated. Community members are encouraged to forward social media chatter to local law enforcement, not to each other, or repost on their platforms.
Fourth, we’ve had several well-planned, peaceful protests throughout the South Bay this week and more are scheduled. When protest organizers work with local law enforcement, civil unrest can be prevented. Our communities have proven it can be done without it getting ugly. Remember, if you see something, say something.
One other note…. we’re scheduling officials from every South Bay city to be our guests on The South Bay Show podcast to bring each community up to date on the latest news. We’ll be featuring a different city every Thursday.
