South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide March 28, 2019
The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

You know spring has arrived when you’re awakened before dawn every morning by the relentless chirping of birds on the nest. Over the last few years, our property has become a de facto nesting ground for all sorts of birds…. and you won’t believe the racket they make. They’re nesting in the front yard, back yard, side yards, under the deck, in the eaves, on the roof, in the old satellite dish. It’s like a condo complex under the deck – every nook and cranny have occupants! I admit the chirping is preferable to an alarm clock, and with the weather behaving, I’ve been taking advantage of the absurd hours I’m keeping with early morning walks on the beach before settling down at my desk. It’s such a lovely way to start the day. The flip side – I’m sound asleep by 9 p.m. which means I’m not in any condition to attend evening events because yawning is never a good look. Happily, there are all sorts of daytime events scheduled this weekend that I’m looking forward to, including an afternoon screening of a documentary film, watching some lucky kids take flight, strolling among the Cherry Blossoms, and hunting for treasures at a community-wide garage sale. I hope to see some of you out there!

Strand Brewing will host the Flying Hero Club on Sunday, March 31 from 9 a.m. through 5 p.m. followed by an After Party from 5 to 8 p.m. When a child has a special need, disease or illness, it is all consuming. Hospital visits and medical treatments like chemotherapy ravage their body. Poked and prodded on a daily basis, they are scared, tired and just want to be a kid. At the Flying Hero Club, Stunt Coordinator Jim Churchman offers the kids a reason to smile and be a super hero. The goal of the Flying Hero Club is to take their minds off the struggles they so bravely fight, and give them something else to think about, talk about, and experience. By allowing the kids to fly like super heroes, memories are created that will last forever. Jim Churchman sets up a computerized flying system, the same system that has flown the likes of Kate Beckinsale, Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, Halle Berry, Robert Downey Jr., Benedict Cumberbatch, and more. The kids will be flown on a belly board, where they are free to act like their favorite superheroes in costumes that are provided. If they cannot lie on a belly board, the kids can be picked up right in their wheelchair. Jim and his crew want every able little warrior to enjoy the power of flight. The kids will fly approximately 100 feet across a given location, at around 4 feet high. The kids start slow and increase the fun according to their comfort level. The kid’s reactions are recorded live on GoPro cameras. The footage is downloaded to a thumb drive and given to the families on the spot. Jim Churchman, creator of the Flying Hero Club, is a Stunt Coordinator for some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbuster superhero movies. He specializes in making performers fly. Now he wants to share that feeling with young people who can benefit the most from the experience. The supporting crew are some of the most skilled, compassionate people on the planet. The event is FREE to attend. contact@smilehighclubinc.com. Strand Brewing is located at 2201 Dominguez Street, Torrance, CA 90501.
