South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide Oct 4, 2018
The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area

I usually include all of the following week’s events in the ‘Head’s Up’ section below, but this week I’ve only listed events through October 13 because the Halloween events start October 14, and if I included them all, this Guide would have been another couple of pages long. If you can’t wait until next week to discover what’s on tap, visit the website at https://www.southbaybyjackie.com/special-events.php. Yep, you’ll have noticed over the last several years that Halloween is no longer a one-day thing. When it comes to Halloween (and the Fourth of July, and Thanksgiving, and Christmas, and birthdays), I’m admittedly old school in that I always celebrate on the actual day – yes, even when it falls on a school night – so I’ll be scurrying about with all the other ghouls and goblins, in search of some spooky fun on All Hallows Eve.
Shrimp Week is back at Ragin Cajun October 1 through October 7! Enjoy shrimp creole, tequila shrimp, BBQ shrimp, shrimp etouffee, blackened shrimp, shrimp cocktail, fried shrimp, grilled shrimp, shrimp po-boy and the ever-popular shrimp boil. (Do I sound like Bubba Blue?) Ragin Cajun offers the best and most authentic Cajun cuisine brought to the South Bay from Lafayette, Louisiana and the most down-home fun you can find west of Bourbon Street, right in Redondo Beach. LAISSEZ LES BONS TEMPS ROULER! (Let the Good Times Roll!) For additional information, visit the website at https://www.ragincajuncafe.com/. Ragin Cajun is located at 525 South Pacific Coast Highway, Redondo Beach, CA.

I haven’t seen this movie yet, but I attended a private preview of the photo exhibit last week. It was terrific and I highly recommend it, especially if you grew up in the South Bay….. In partnership with the Sunscreen Film Festival, Pacific Coast Gallery will host an ###strong celebrating the premiere of Jazz v. Punk: Hermosa Beach on Saturday, October 6 from 7 to 10 p.m. This new documentary about jazz and punk music in Hermosa Beach premieres October 5 at the Sunscreen Film Festival in Hermosa Beach (see event post above) and features SPOT among many other South Bay punk and jazz luminaries. All October, Pacific Coast Gallery is exhibiting the work of famed SST producer and photographer SPOT, in an exhibition called Ride the Wild Wheels. SPOT is well known for producing many of the early releases from Black Flag, the Minutemen, Descendents, Meat Puppets and Husker Du (among many other bands from that era) and he was also a prolific photographer and sharp-eyed chronicler of life in LA and Hermosa during the 70s and early 80s. Many of his images were featured in his acclaimed photo bookSounds of Two Eyes Opening, released in 2014. The exhibit features beach, roller skate, skateboard, surf and punk rock photos from Hermosa Beach and the South Bay. This is the first time SPOT has ever offered these images as fine art prints, and they have been printed by the same master printer, and to the same standards, as the other fine art landscape photos at Pacific Coast Gallery. They have also released some of SPOT’s never before seen images of Black Flag from their Nervous Breakdownrecording session, as this record nears its 40th anniversary. Ride the Wild Wheels runs all October and wraps-up November 3rd with a closing reception at 7pm, featuring a panel and Q&A with SPOT, SST Records co-owner Joe Carducci and Randy Nauert from the seminal surf rock band The Challengers. For additional information, visit the website at http://pacificcoast.gallery/. Pacific Coast Gallery is located at 205 Pier Avenue, Hermosa Beach, CA.

Children will have fun sorting, matching and problem solving as they select tools, replace parts and fill work orders. Working with other mechanics encourages positive social skills, and the exhibit’s activities will help enhance fine and gross motor skills. Little mechanics can step into a pretend auto shop equipped with all the tools they need to perform maintenance on a kid-sized car mounted on a lift.
