Everything You Want to Know About What is Happening this Weekend in the South Bay

Watching the news coverage of the fires in Orange County and the Napa area earlier this week, demonstrates once again just how devastating fire season can be in California. It brings back memories of the fire storms in 1993…. we didn’t need to turn on the TV because we could see the flames destroying Malibu from our windows, decks, rooftops and beaches. Here in the South Bay, we’ve been fortunate not to experience anything of that magnitude, but it’s essential to stay on our toes. You know the drill – make sure smoke detectors are operational; keep vegetation around structures to a minimum; use spark arrestors; have a plan for your family; know what you need to take with you; be ready to evacuate on a moment’s notice; and take a C.E.R.T. class! Every city in the South Bay offers this instruction to get you and your family prepared! I recently posted the latest classes for Torrance and Redondo Beach. Manhattan Beach has a class coming up November 2 through November 5: http://mbcerta.org/. It’s time to get CERTified!

The Torrance Historical Society & Museum will host a Meet the Author event on Sunday, October 15 at 2 p.m. with Loralee Spradlin, author of Torrance High School of the Campus History Series. Torrance High School opened in war-time on September 11, 1917. The new school initially served all school-age children in one building – 19 high school students, and grades one to eight. By 1923, the elementary students had their own school and Torrance High stood as the only high school until the 1950s. Today, it remains the oldest school still in continuous use in the state, and last month it was selected by Architectural Digest Magazine as the most beautiful public high school in California. Back in the day, the City of Torrance was developing a reputation as an industrial powerhouse. As the population of the city grew, so did the campus of Torrance High. The rich history of Torrance High School is filled with academic and athletic successes, as well as storied alumni like Louis Zamperini and Ted Tanouye, who served the United States during World War II. In the 1990s, the highly recognizable Main Building was the set for several television shows, including Beverly Hills 90210 and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and movies, such as She’s All That and Not Another Teen Movie. Author Loralee Spradlin, a Torrance Tartar herself (1993), captures this 100-year history in a 128-page Arcadia Publishing book entitled Torrance High School. Light refreshments will be served and books will be available for purchase ($22) and signing. This event is free and open to the public. No reservations are necessary, but seating is limited to first-come/first-served. For additional information, visit the website athttps://www.southbaybyjackie.com/south-bay-jackie-weekend-guide-2

Halloween in the South Bay is seriously off the rails. I don’t ever remember Halloween being anywhere near as much fun back in the day as it is now. The good news is it’s not just for kids anymore! I’ve already posted several local Halloween events on my website and more will be listed over the next week or two.
I was walking by the former Jonathan’s location on Catalina Avenue the other day and saw a notice taped to the window. Turns out, The Rockefeller will be opening a new location in Riviera Village! The Rockefeller has locations in Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach and is expanding their brand south. Now, folks living on the hill, in Torrance and South Redondo Beach will no longer have to head north for a Rockefeller fix. The storefront isn’t quite empty yet and they’ll have to install a full commercial kitchen, so it will be awhile before it opens for business. I hope they continue the Tuesday 99 cent burger special at the new location!
Have you ever dreamed of riding on a float in the Rose Parade? Here’s your chance! The normal cost to ride on the Torrance float is $1,500….. but for a donation of $10, you can be entered in the opportunity drawing to ride on the 2018 float “Protecting Nature: The Madrona Marsh Preserve” on January 1, 2018. To purchase Opportunity Drawing Tickets, download the order form at http://www.torrancerosefloat.org/images/forms/trfa_ride-of-life_form_2018.pdf. For additional information, visit the website at http://www.torrancerosefloat.org/.
