South Bay By Jackie Weekend Guide October 6, 2016

The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

A couple of thoughts…. It seems that Halloween has officially taken over the entire month of October. Back in the day, you’d start seeing pumpkins and other decorations about ten days before the big night. These days, entire homes are swathed in spider webs and other creepy things the first week in October. And, yes, the giant bags of candy are already in the stores. I place my carved pumpkin on the doorstep the week before, just because it only looks good that long….and I buy the candy the day before (for obvious reasons). On another subject, the new Shade Hotel Redondo Beach is in the process of opening and hosted a big, public event last weekend. I’m a supporter of the redevelopment of the harbor and Shade is the first step in that process. It’s an incredible facility and wonderful amenity for the community. When you have a chance, you must stop by and check out the view from the rooftop – it offers a completely new perspective. Never before have we had the opportunity to view the coast and bay from this vantage point…….it is, SPECTACULAR!

On Friday, October 7, several South Bay Police Departments will be participating in National Coffee with a Cop Day. The Coffee with a Cop program was started by our own Hawthorne Police Department in 2011 as a way to help “break down barriers” between police and the community. The concept is simple, Police officers and community members come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink coffee. Since 2011, Coffee with a Cop has done wonders for community trust and partnership building. One of the keys to Coffee with a Cop’s success is that it removes the physical barriers that routinely exist between police officers and community members, allowing for the relaxed, one-on-one interactions which are the necessary foundation of partnerships. Informal contact in a friendly atmosphere increases trust between police officers and the members of our community which is critical to public safety and problem solving.
