South Bay By Jackie Weekend Guide Sept. 17, 2015

The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area

These days, it’s all about the rain, and that was a nice, much needed soak we experienced the other day. At this point, we’d welcome any form of precipitation but we really don’t want it to interfere with our weekend plans, right? For better or worse, it’s going to be clear over the next few days so let’s get out and enjoy the rain-washed skies while we can. There’s a monster El Nino on the horizon and (hopefully?) it’s coming our way.

The annual California Coastal Cleanup Day, a yearly beach and inland waterway effort to eliminate waste, will take place Saturday, September 19. You’ve been recycling for years, reduced your water consumption, turned in the old gas guzzler for a cleaner fuel ride and maybe even installed solar panels. What more can be done? Funny you should ask. Join thousands of volunteers up and down the coast as they gather to remove trash and debris that eventually ends up in the ocean. California Coastal Cleanup Day was first organized in 1985 by the California Coastal Commission. Last year, over 65,000 volunteers removed almost 770,000 pounds of trash from beaches, rivers and lakes throughout the state. Coastal Cleanup Day is about much more than picking up trash. It’s a chance for Californians to join people around the world in expressing their respect for our oceans and waterways. It’s an opportunity for the community to demonstrate its desire for clean water and healthy marine life. It’s a moment to share with one’s neighbors, family, and friends, coming together to accomplish something vital and worthy on behalf of our environment. Heal the Bay will be organizing the South Bay effort and there are cleanup sites from El Segundo to Rolling Hills. The cleanup takes place between 9 a.m. and noon. To learn more and sign up as a volunteer, visit the website at http://www.healthebay.org. Yes, you can do more.

The judging results are then presented in the afternoon as the winning autos are recognized in the Parade of Excellence. As they take their honorary drive in front the crowd, they are awarded their coveted Palos Verdes Concours D’Elegance crystal trophies to the sound of the gallery’s cheers. Will your favorites of the day be chosen? There’s only one way to know. Just once a year. You should be here. Mark your calendar. Bring your friends and family.
