South Bay Man Sues Hollywood Bowl over Fireworks Injury

A Manhattan Beach couple today sued a company that staged a fireworks show after a 2013 concert at the Hollywood Bowl, alleging that the man was injured after being struck in an eye by debris.

Brian and Marion Chappel filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court against Pryo Spectaculars, alleging negligence, loss of consortium and liability for ultra-hazardous activities. The Chappels are seeking unspecified damages.

A representative for the Rialto-based fireworks firm could not be immediately reached for comment.

The suit states the Chappels were seated in the second row of the Hollywood Bowl’s garden boxes, left of center stage, while attending a concert on Aug. 23, 2013. As the two looked into the sky to watch the fireworks show after the concert, Brian Chappel was struck in one eye by a particle from the display, the suit says.

He had to undergo medical treatment to correct the damage to his eye, according to the lawsuit, which says his injuries have impaired his ability to work and have “created challenges to (his) everyday life.”
