South Bay Weekend Guide for August 6, 2015

Handy Guide to All Events Happening in the South Bay of Los Angeles California!

I know I say this every summer but it is so true – time flies when you’re having fun – and this summer has been overflowing with fun events…..and it’s already August! Did any of you stop by The Point last weekend for the Grand Opening events? No worries, they have a line-up of community events scheduled including free concerts every week through the end of September. Whew! Now we won’t go through withdrawal when the Hermosa Summer Concerts conclude at the end of this month!

The innovative art laboratory ESMoA is setting the stage for theatre in El Segundo, California, with a Concert Reading ofAbundance, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Beth Henley’s stingingly funny yet touching drama, staged by Pacific Stages. The concert readings are scheduled for Friday, August 7 and Saturday, August 8 and will begin at 7 p.m. The concert reading by Pacific Stages is directed by Robert Bailey and produced by Jeryll Adler. This is a FREE event. To reserve a seat at the reading, please email rsvp@esmoa.org with “Stage Reading” in the subject line. Donations to Pacific Stages are welcome. Free street parking is available after 6 p.m. in the surrounding area. Attendees will also be able to park next door to ESMoA in the lot at 204 Main Street free of charge. Friends of Redondo Beach Arts present the second and final weekend of the fourth annual CA 101 Art Exhibition at the AES Power Plant in Redondo Beach. Attendees will view the works of artists hailing from California’s Oregon border to the Mexican border. A champagne reception is planned for Friday, August 7 from 5 to 10 p.m. The exhibition hours are Saturday, August 8 from 1 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, August 9 from 1 to 6 p.m. I stopped by last weekend and the show is FANTASTIC – don’t miss this! The City of Hermosa Beach and Navy Days LA present a Free Concert by The Destroyers, U.S. Naval Band on Saturday August 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the Hermosa Beach Pier. As part of the Navy Days LA celebration in the South Bay and Port of Los Angeles, the community is invited to enjoy this free sunset concert on the beach. The concert will take place just south of the Pier on the sand. Attendees should bring anything required for an outdoor, evening concert: blankets, beach chairs and picnic items! Smokin’ Smitty & the Masters of Music will be playing at The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach on Saturday, August 8! The music starts at 9 p.m. and be sure to wear your dancin’ shoes because this band will have you on your feet all night! The Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau host the annual Summer Sidewalk Sale in Downtown Hermosa Beach on Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event features live music, discounts and specials at local shops and restaurants in the Downtown area. Pick up specially priced merchandise at participating stores and celebrate the summer with seasonal menu items at local restaurants. Enjoy live music at three separate stages. On Sunday, when all the shopping is done, hang around for the Hermosa Beach Summer Concert featuring Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers at the Hermosa Beach Pier. Saint Rocke and LA Car Guy present the second of the 2015 Hermosa Beach Summer Concert Series! The concert will take place on Sunday, August 9 from 4 to 8 p.m. on the south side of the Hermosa Beach Pier located at the base of Pier Plaza and features Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers. These concerts are some of the most popular events in the South Bay and the crowds number well into the thousands. Arrive early to claim a prime viewing spot! The City of El Segundo Recreation & Parks Department presents the final show of the 2015 Summer Concerts in the Park series sponsored by Chevron. These free concerts take place on select Sunday evenings at Library Park located at the 600 block of Main Street in beautiful downtown El Segundo. Activities begin at 4 p.m. with the music starting at 4:30 and running until 6 p.m. The final show of the season features the Scott Whyte Band. The Lunada Bay Homeowners Association presents the Summer Concert Series in Lunada Bay Park on Sunday, August 9, featuring the indie/folk music of Mike Stocksdale. The concert gets underway at 5 p.m. so be sure to bring a picnic dinner and enjoy a wonderful evening in the park with family and friends. The event also features a raffle and prizes. USC Alumni present the second annual TrojanFest at the South Coast Botanic Garden on Sunday, August 9. TrojanFest is a family summer celebration designed to bring together old friends and introduce new ones to the South Bay Trojan Community. The event runs from 1 to 4 p.m. Bring the whole family for a fun-filled day with the Trojan Marching Band, Traveler, the Song Girls, special guests and fellow Trojans. Kids will have a blast with games and activities while fellow alumni and friends reconnect. Food, beer, and other libations will be available for purchase. Admission fee includes entrance to the 87-acre Garden. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for children four years and older. Children under four are free. Admission includes access to the 87-acre South Coast Botanic Garden, fun activities for kids, performances by the Trojan Marching Band, photo booth, DJ and parking. This event is for anyone interested in what USC has to offer and a chance to meet alumni and other members of the USC family. TrojanFest is collaboration between the Trojan Club of San Pedro-Peninsula, Marshall Partners, the Alumni Club of the L.A. Beach Cities, Trojan League of South Bay, Young Alumni Council and several other USC affiliated organizations. To celebrate the Dog Days of Summer, Rock & Brews El Segundo will offer a free item from the doggy menu with the purchase of a human entree every Monday through Thursday in August from 2 to 6 p.m. On Sunday, August 9, Rock & Brews El Segundo will team up with PAL Rescue and Adoption to host a dog adoption from 12 to 4 p.m. Rock & Brews El Segundo offers a dog menu every day. The Western Museum of Flight will host Make N Take Model Sessions every Wednesday in August from noon to 2 p.m. Everyone is invited to stop by the WMoF and take part in this fun, family activity. Build it and then take it home, while at the same time learning a little about flight and the triumph of space pioneering. These sessions are exciting, engaging, educational, and something the whole family will enjoy together! Guests are invited to build as many models as they like. Each kit is $12. The staff of Pacific Coast Hobbies will be on hand to assist with building and answer technical questions. These Make ‘N Take sessions also include entry to the museum and free parking is available in the Museum lot. To make a reservation, email the museum at info@wmof.com or call 310-326-9544. The Point will host Concerts in The Point Plaza every Wednesday night through September 30. The free concerts will feature tribute bands from 6 to 8 p.m. This Wednesday, August 12, the concert will feature the music of Escape, a Journey tribute band.
