El Segundo Museum of Art presents a screening of PLAY on Friday, May 20 from 7 to 8 p.m. Join ESMoA Artist-in-Residence Savio Debernardis for a screening of his film, PLAY. (Color, 26 min, 2015. French with English subtitles) Through an internet open-call, 7 actors were selected and invited to participate in a residency in the castle La Roche-Guyon in order to act in a short film. What they still didn’t know is that only the most motivated would be part of the film. Doors open at 7 p.m. Recommended for adult audiences 18 and up. Q&A with Director to follow. The Torrance Chamber of Commerce and the Village Runner present the annual Armed Forces Day 5k Run/Walk onSaturday, May 21 at Del Amo Fashion Center starting at 8 a.m. The event will feature split timers every mile, computerized finish times, water stations and sponsor refreshments. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each division and a gift certificate to Village Runner stores. All runners will receive a cool t-shirt. The Pregnancy Help Center in Torrance presents the 29 annualWalk for Life, themed Life Force, on Saturday, May 21. The leisurely seaside 5K, which starts at 9 a.m. from Veterans Park in Redondo Beach, welcomes everyone in the community, including senior walkers and families with children and baby strollers. Onsite registration opens at 7:30 a.m. and raffles and other festivities will take place BEFORE the Walk this year. Each year, hundreds of individuals and families participate to support the work of the Pregnancy Help Center, which has been offering free pregnancy testing in the South Bay since 1976. WalkAbout Redondo will be held on Saturday, May 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Redondo Beach Parks & Recreation Building. The North Redondo Beach Business Association (NRBBA), working closely with its co-sponsor the Beach Cities Health District / Blue Zones Project, encourages local residents to participate in this unique community event. WalkAbout Redondo registered participants receive a “passport” and map of participating businesses, then walk the 2.8 mile Artesia Boulevard circuit to meet local businesses and collect “stamps” denoting they have visited each business. Raffle tickets are given based upon the number of businesses visited. During the entire event the NRBBA provides music, food and refreshments in the Parks & Recreation parking lot. Registration for the event is FREE and opens at 9 a.m.Lunch begins at noon with the raffle scheduled for 2 p.m. The NRBBA and the Blue Zones Project are expecting 80+ businesses and 500+ walkers for this year’s event. Registration opens at 9 a.m. and is FREE to all participants. Registration is only accepted in person, on the day of the event. There is no online registration for this year’s event. The Redondo Beach Pier Association hosts FREE Yoga on the Pieron Saturday, May 21 from 10 a.m. to noon. I’ve seen photographs of this event and it looks cool……..Long Way Home presents the annual Runway to Rebuild Fashion Show onSaturday, May 21 from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Knights of Columbus in Redondo Beach. The Runway to Rebuild Fashion Show presents formalwear made from used, recycled, up-cycled, and reclaimed materials. The annual event is a fundraiser to benefit the non-profit community development organization, Long Way Home. Runway to Rebuild and Long Way Home share the common purpose of promoting sustainability in both design and construction. This year’s event will benefit our local community by sponsoring 10 young adults to spend a week in Guatemala volunteering at Long Way Home’s school. The event also features a silent auction with amazing items to bid on; a cocktail party following the Fashion Show; special guest DJs to perform and Christi Carrillo as Master of Ceremonies. The South Bay Stories Show presents two performances onSaturday, May 21 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 22 at 1:30 p.m.at the Second Story Theater in Hermosa Beach. A surfer and a jet pilot; a woman into extreme cycling; a contestant on The Dating Game; these and five others will tell their personal stories at the second edition of the South Bay Stories Show (SBSS) at the 2nd Story Theater in Hermosa Beach. The show promises variety, excitement, and laughs. Producer Jim Mueller was surprised but happy when last October’s SBSS sold out. “The audience embraced the stories so strongly that we had to go for it again.” he says. “Each story is like a little play and the listener’s mind is the stage and the imagination paints the scenery,” says Director Tony Torrisi, familiar to a lot of theater fans in the South Bay. He noticed the powerful connection between the storytellers and the audience. “After the show, a lot of people told me the stories were so good, they didn’t know where the time went,” he said. “Storytelling has been around so long it’s part of our DNA by now.” The shows onMay 21 and May 22 feature nine personal stories. The King Harbor Yacht Club hosts the annual King Harbor Sea Fair on Sunday, May 22 from noon to 5 p.m. This free, family friendly event offers a unique opportunity to prepare for the summer boating season. Sea Fair promotes safe boating practices and environmental awareness, while highlighting recreational opportunities in our harbor. The event features over 60 local participating organizations, free outrigger canoe and sailboat rides, kid’s crafts and activities, stand-up paddleboard demonstrations, life jacket and safety show and a variety of boat and marine displays. The Torrance Historical Society will kick-off their annual Walking Tours of Historic Old Torrance on Sunday, May 22. This FREE docent-led tour begins at the Torrance Historical Museum at 1:30 p.m. and will point out many historic sites and landmarks in Old Torrance founded in 1912. Guests will learn . . .

• What’s in the cornerstone of the original Jared Sidney Torrance Memorial Hospital

• Why Downtown was laid-out in a “Y” fashion

• About the explosion that helped put Torrance on the map

• What TV character “lived” on Cota

• About the oldest church building still in continuous use

The tour will also include information regarding the world renown landscape architectural firm of Olmsted & Sons, John C., and Frederick Law, Jr. of Brookline MA, who designed the City of Torrance. Attendees will learn how the City and some of the streets in Downtown got their name, where the first public library originated, the original boundaries of the City, where Buffy the Vampire Slayer was filmed and more. The tour is an easy, but brisk walk covering eight blocks. The walk is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
