London Supermodel Settles Happily into Santa Monica Lifestyle

International supermodel Patrick Kuan, AKA the Marlboro Man and face of Bruno Banani Cologne, says living in Santa Monica is a world-class experience.

The London transplant had his fill of rainy days and rain-soaked runs and was captivated by the beautiful California weather when spending time here on business ventures.

“Santa Monica has to be the Mecca for living a healthy lifestyle,” Kuan says. “After living in central London I made a bee-line for the beach when it came to finding somewhere to live. I’m fortunate enough to live six blocks from the water which makes staying in shape so much easier.”

Kuan loves jogging bare foot in the soft sand making it low impact, yet providing that tough work out that keeps the all important core firing.

“As a reward for my pounding the sand I stop off at my favorite coffee shop Dog Town Coffee, the Spanish latte is hard to beat.”

Kuan says the Santa Monica dog friendly atmosphere inspired him to adopt his own.

“I’ve got a new best friend in Murphy. We go for walks on the beach and take in the sights of the city. Having a dog is so easy in Santa Monica while in London it wouldn’t have been so easy for me to consider.”

Kuan, a professional model for over 15 years is represented by some of the most recognized agencies in the world. His primary agency in London is Storm who also represents Kate Moss, Karolina Kurkova and Lili Cole.

Being here he has filmed numerous commercials including working for Nike with LeBron James, for Cadillac and for Kohls.

Kuan moved to Santa Monica five years ago and needed a change from the overcast, gloomy London weather.

“Cold, dark dank days take a heavy toll on one’s motivation. I had visited California on a number of times with work, and quickly fell in love with the climate, the lifestyle and the people. I made a promise to myself to live in California one day and it took me two years, but I got here in the end.”

Kuan believes the scientific evidence suggesting nature has a profound affect on a person’s mental state.

“I’ve felt this for some time. Living in urban areas has made me crave getting back to nature. One of my favorite pastimes is hopping on my motorbike with a minimum of camping gear and heading to Sequoia National Forest for a couple of days. I love being there and it really helps me slow down, focus and clear my mind.”

Kuan is adamant the California lifestyle is a positive influence on his health and fitness habits.

“Since I’ve been living this side of the pond I’ve made a real concerted effort to think about food and to maintain a healthy lifestyle. A big part of that is applying the “Breeze Method” to as much of my life as possible. It’s very much a holistic approach and one that’s giving me some huge results.

“I’m a sucker for a good smoothie. Most mornings I start my day by throwing together a load of fruit and adding some chia seeds and almonds for good measure.”

Kuan says Santa Monica’s stand on the environment promotes a healthy lifestyle agenda. He has been impressed with the City’s commitment to its residents’ well being.

“I captain a men’s soccer team in the LA Premier League. It sounds very professional, but the standard is fairly ordinary. The “banter” however is of the highest caliber. I’ve played soccer since I was a kid and it helps keep the heart pumping. The day I hang up my cleats will be a sorry one.”

Kuan says he has a specific regime to stay in shape and keep his edge.

“To keep from completely seizing up during the week after games I can often be found making strange noises on a yoga mat. Before I arrived in LA I regularly bashed my body playing soccer so yoga is now an integral part of my health and fitness regime. Thankfully living in Santa Monica yoga studios are easily accessible.”

Has California traffic been a deterrent to this former Londoner?

“I quickly found my way around traffic. For anything local I hop straight on my bicycle and for longer trips I opt for my Harley. The two wheel approach is working well for me.”

Kuan says the combination of sunshine and the positive “can do” attitude of the locals (quite a contrast to the naysayer British approach), along with embracing healthy eating has created the perfect environment for excelling in the world of male modeling.

“No matter where I travel in the world, it’s a great feeling to know the sun and the beach await me when I return home. I am thrilled to be here in Santa Monica and settled into the California lifestyle.”
