For performances that were “flawlessly paced, beautifully detailed and emotionally powerful,” Russian pianist Nikita Mndoyants finished among the top six in the 2013 Cliburn Competition, 36 years after his father won a Cliburn prize.
As an active composer, Mndoyants received first prize at the third Myaskovsky International Competition of Composers in 2014, and his works have been performed by Daniel Hope, Nicolas Stavy, the Szymanowski and Zemlinsky quartets, Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, and others.
The accomplished musician will give a performance scheduled for 8 p.m. Oct. 30 in El Camino College’s Marsee’s Auditorium.
Mndoyants’ connection to music began in his childhood - he gave his first public recital when he was 10 years old, and one year later released his first recording of a live performance at the Sibelius Academy Concert Hall in Helsinki. Since then, Mndoyants has toured throughout Europe, China, Israel, Russia, and the United States. He continues to earn praise for his playing that is “exciting, individualistic, vibrant, and full of dynamic and tonal detail.”
He has been invited to perform in several festivals, including the Chopin Festival in Duszniki-Zdroj, the International Keyboard Institute and Festival in New York, and a festival dedicated to the World Economic Forum in Davos. A frequent guest of orchestras, he has worked with Leonard Slatkin, Eri Klas, Ignat Solzhenitsyn, Charles Ansbacher, and Alexander Sladkovsky, among other conductors.
For the El Camino College performance, Mndoyants will present: Haydn’s Sonata in E Major, Hob XVI No. 31; Schumann’s “Davidsbündlertänze;” Beethoven’s Sonata No. 23 Appassionata in f minor, Op. 57; and Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 7 in B flat Major. Op. 83.
Tickets for the performance are $26 each and may be purchased online at centerforthearts.org, by phone at 310-329-5345 or toll-free at 800-832-ARTS. The Ticket Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Campus parking is $3. The El Camino College Marsee Auditorium is located at 16007 Crenshaw Boulevard, Torrance.
