At least Eagle Rock residents had a choice of locations for National Night Out. Cypress Park did not. Either go to Divine Saviour Catholic Church or don't.
National night out has turned into nothing more than a church service. People turned out at the churches because that is the church they go to. It is nothing more than that. it has lost its meaning. It is for the sole purpose of religous outreach to get new members. Where does church and state cross the lines? Last night Cypress Park had their National night out ONLY at one location, Divine Saviour Catholic Church. Everyone that attended sat through a "church service" and then a short walk. City officials and approx. 5 LAPD officers were at a "church service" for 3 hours on taxpayers time. Really? Yes, it was nothing more than a "church service" where religious prayers were given and they sang religious songs. National Night out is not suppose to be a "church service".
It is suppose to be an outreach to the community. That is not what happened last night in Cypress Park. LAPD NE needs to reach out to the entire community. That means being more inclusive of other religous organizations and having events are different locations, not just ONE!! And, of course Father Marco felt the need to blast his amplified sound system for a couple hours non-stop just to prove, "look at me, look at what I can do" kind of mentality. Noise is a selfish thing when it is forced on others. LAPD and our government authorities should not support bad behaviour. And, they should enforce noise laws. National Night Out purpose is not to hold a "church service". Get back to what is it suppose to mean.
