Patch Blog: Eroots Farmers are Food Celebrities
Meet and greet a real live local farmer this Thursday at eroots!
Last Friday I told my daughter Sydney the news that one of our local farmers would be coming to our . She was elated! Then her spirits sank when I reminded her that she would be in Chicago visiting grandparents and would miss the farmer’s visit. “Can you at least get his autograph?” she pleaded. I’m still pondering what it means when a nine-year-old city girl wants a farmer’s autograph. But while Sydney must suffice with a mere autograph the rest of us will have the pleasure of meeting in person, the latest, greatest Los Angeles celebrity--the local farmer.
This Thursday, July 19, Farmer Gabriel Ruiz from Unity Farm will make a special appearance at the eroots’ produce box pick up from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Annex, 5827 York Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90042. Gabriel will discuss the unique varieties of fruits and veggies he grows on the farm and the essential role eroots and its members play in supporting Unity Farm’s efforts in sustainable farming. All are welcome.

Unity Farm is best known for not growing what other farms grow. From their 12 acre farm in Riverside County, Unity Farm supplies eroots and premier Los Angeles and Orange County restaurants with a vast variety of produce; including heirloom lettuces, purple artichokes, zebra tomatoes and Caribbean spinach. Gabriel originally grew up in the city but for three years he lived in Mexico helping his father with his farming operations. It was there he discovered his strong connection to the soil. Shortly upon returning to the United States he partnered with his oldest brother and started Unity Farm. Together with his brother, a vegan for over 15 years, they search out the highest nutrient content varieties of produce, grow them in the farm’s rich river bottom soil, and deliver them fresh to eroots.
Come to meet and greet Farmer Gabriel this Thursday. And bring your autograph book!
