The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)
Directed by Clint Eastwood
Starring Clint Eastwood, Sondra Locke, and Chief Dan George
Empire and Liberty: The Civil War and the West shows how the institution of slavery and the notion of liberty were intricately tied to westward expansion. Many of the issues raised in the exhibition are also addressed onscreen. The Civil War block concludes with The Outlaw Josey Wales.
Josey Wales (Eastwood) is a Missouri farmer caught in the middle of the Civil War. When Union guerrillas murder his family, he joins the Confederacy intent upon exacting revenge. Wales eventually heads West in hopes of settling down but his past quickly catches up with him.
Prior to the screening, hear remarks from guest speaker Henry C. Parke, Film Editor for True West magazine and Creator of Henry’s Western Round-up.
