84-Year-Old Killed Walking On 101 Freeway Identified
Authorities don't know why the 84-year-old man was walking along the freeway in the middle of the night.
HOLLYWOOD, CA — Authorities Wednesday identified an 84-year-old man who was struck and fatally injured by a car while walking on the northbound Hollywood (101) Freeway in the Hollywood area.
Carlos Mejia of Los Angeles was in the No. 5 lane of the freeway, south of Gower Street, when he was hit about 1 a.m. Friday and died later that day at a hospital, according to the coroner's office and the California Highway Patrol.
According to the CHP, Mejia was hit by a 2007 Nissan driven by a 34- year-old man from Sanger, near Fresno. After hitting Mejia, the motorist and his passenger exited the freeway and called 911, then got back on the freeway and waited for officers to arrive, according to the CHP.

It's unknown why Mejia was walking on the freeway, and alcohol and drugs have been ruled out as factors in the collision, the CHP reported.
The CHP asked anyone who witnessed the crash to call investigators at 323-259-3200.
