Balloons Cause Hollywood Power Outage

More than 1,700 customers were left without power following a pair of outages.

A pair of power outages that occurred blocks apart left more than 1,700 Department of Water and Power customers in the Hollywood area without electricity today.

The first outage occurred around 12:40 p.m. near Santa Monica Boulevard and Sycamore Avenue, according to Albert Rodriguez of DWP. He said 719 customers were affected by the outage.

About an hour later, another outage was reported near Highland and DeLongpre avenues, affecting around 1,000 customers, he said.

Crews were working to restore power, and electricity was already back on for some customers by early afternoon. DWP officials estimated that all the repairs would be completed by 8:30 p.m.

At least one of the outages was caused by metallic balloons making contact with power lines, according to the DWP.
