Bernstein High Football Kicks Off Sept. 2
The Dragons open their 2011 campaign against Annenberg in Los Angeles.

The Helen Bernstein High football program kicks off its fourth varsity season in Los Angeles on Sept. 2 against Annenberg and head coach Darrell Divinity is hoping the Dragons can improve on last year's 1-9 mark.
Divinity has coached the team since its inaugural season in 2008 and over its first three seasons Bernstein won two game—beating Sun Valley 24-20 in a nonleague game last year and beating Roybal 12-7 for its first-ever league win the year before. The Dragons finished last in the Southern League last fall but three of their six losses were by seven points or less.
Bernstein lost at home to Annenberg 13-0 in its opener last season. The Dragons begin their season with three consecutive road games before returning home to open league play Sept. 30 against Jefferson, which beat Bernstein 40-20 last year.

Sandwiched between Bernstein's second and third league games is an intersectional contest against small school powerhouse St. Margaret's of San Juan Capistrano at home Oct. 14.
The Tartans reached the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section East Valley Division playoffs last year under first-year coach Rod Baltau after having won section titles the four previous years — in 2006 under coach Jason Hitchens and in 2007-09 under coach Harry Welch.

The annual grudge game against Hollywood High is Nov. 4 at Bernstein. The Dragons have yet to beat their crosstown rivals, losing the first three meetings by scores of 69-0 in 2008, 45-7 in 2009 and 40-8 last season.
Opening the season Sept. 2 gives Bernstein a week off before its second game Sept. 16 at Esteban Torres of Los Angeles. Should the Dragons qualify for the playoffs, they will compete in the Los Angeles City Section Division II bracket.
